Everything is a Remix – A Collection of Videos
On music last week, I came across a lot of great videos on YouTube covering the remix culture within music. Here are some of the highlights: Everything is a Remix Part 1 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo. Part 2 of the Series above, this video touches on remixes in film: Everything is a Remix Part 2 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo. An extended extrapolation of the Kill Bill references from Everything is a Remix Pt 2: Axis of Awesome’s 4 Chord Song, showing how most of the popular songs in... Read The Rest →
Digitisation and Being a Pirate
This week, we looked at music. It’s been a topic I have looked forward to discussing, as through online platforms like MySpace (which funnily enough, I am no longer a member of), I was able to connect to many commercially successful artists as a fan and able to meet them personally, attend their gigs for free and bring my friends too. In hindsight, you can easily see this was a great way to promote themselves in cities across the world – connect with your biggest fans with followers and let... Read The Rest →
Digitisation and convergence in Film Quotes – #WEB207
Rather than answering the uni questions, I want to highlight some of my favourite quotes from readings this week. From Desktop Productions: Digital Distribution and Public Film Cultures (Chuck Tryon, 2009): “Somebody else’s straw is in our milkshake, and they’re drinking it up. That straw is movie theft” - John Fithian on Piracy. “Hollywood [is an] old guard hopelessly stuck in the past, aware perhaps that the game has changed bu unprepared to do anything – other than making draconian but ultimately ineffective legal and technological effort — to adjust.”... Vivid Sydney 2012
Besides attending some of the ideas talks for Vivid Sydney, I was also able to attend some of the music nights (Florence and The Machine UK and the Ceremonial Orchestra; LCD Soundsystem – Shut up and play the hits!) and shoot the lights! In its fourth year, the Vivid Festival gave lots of eye candy for photographers to snap and interact with. It was one of the first times that I used my cheap cable release ($3!) from eBay, and it was actually more fun to take the photos, especially... Read The Rest →
The Tyranny of Digital Distance – #WEB207
Part 3 – this weeks reflection of the digitisation and convergence of television via Tama Leavers paper, “Watching Battlestar Galactica in Australia and the Tyranny of Digital Distance”. Has your viewing been impacted by the problem of ‘digital distance’ and, if so, how? Were you forced to find a way around the problem by less-than-legal means? I often don’t contribute or search for content that has overflowed from the television screens, so this is usually not a problem. However most international shows that I do watch is by less than... Expansion, Overflow and Synergy #WEB207
Here is part 2 of my musings on the digitisation of television [Part 1 can be found here] Have you interacted with any forms of overflow from television programmes and did it impact on your viewing experience? In terms of television overflow, my participation in overflow is minimal. I partake in the occasional official hashtags for programs that are time dependent (e.g.: Eurovision, My Kitchen Rules or Amazing Race) and read up on gossip blogs and tabloid magazines to find out more about stars only when I really want to... Time Shifting and Advertising – WEB207
This week, we covered Television. Here is part 1 of my musings on the convergence of Television, time shifting and advertising. Has your television viewing experience changed over your lifetime? Were you ever tied to the broadcaster’s schedule? Do you now use any of the available methods (personal recording or online catchup etc.) to time-shift your viewing to fit your own schedule? Most definitely. I was a child who loved television in the afternoons – I’d race home to watch my favourite cartoons (or soaps as I got older!) so... Read The Rest →
Intro to WEB207
It has been quite some time between my last web musings, having had a study hiatus for a 12 month period. I’ve picked up where i have left off, having just completed NET204 (Internet Communities and Social Networks) where we held a successful online conference looking at streams of Community, Web 2.0, Identity and Social Networks. You can find my conference paper on Social Networks here. This study period, I face one of my most anticipated subjects, “WEB 207: Web Media”. In this unit, we are to compile a pitch...
