The Nitty Gritty

Location: Castle Hill, South Island, New Zealand
Distance: <1 km
Trail style: Return
Climb: <100 m
Grade: Easy

Highlights of this area:

  • The Dalai Lama named it the spiritual centre of the universe
  • It was used for a battle scene in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe
  • It is a firm favourite for rock climbers

First stop in the afternoon after landing in Christchurch – and we weren’t disappointed. The rock formations were enough to shake off the disappointment of the miserable rainy weather that greeted us. We didn’t quite have the time for a day walk, but from the car park it is just a short walk to the limestone boulders. They were certainly big and impressive!
